Matthew Stead – Musical Director
We are delighted that Matthew is our Musical Director and will be writing arrangements for, mentoring and leading our Youth Ukulele Orchestra.
Matt is a full time ukulele tutor and performer with a wealth of teaching experience and is able to pass on his knowledge with great enthusiasm and expertise. Found most days in his ukulele shop/school of excellence, the Uke Room, Matt also teaches in schools and at ukulele events throughout the UK making music accessible and exciting for everyone. His latest pupil to take Grade One Ukulele achieved a 95% Pass with Distinction.
In addition to teaching, Matt is a fantastic arranger and composer and has written pieces for the University of West London Ukulele Grades (the globally recognised grading system for ukulele.)
As if he hasn’t got enough to do Matt ALSO performs on ukulele with bassist Rob Ash. Their last two ukulele albums received much acclaim and have led to performances at the award winning Grand Northern Ukulele Festival, The Ukulele Festival of Great Britain and The Ukulele Festival of Scotland as well as many others. His music has been played globally and on Radio One in the UK. Steven Sproat, one of the UKs most well known ukulele performers (he taught Frank Skinner how to play and is the author of top selling ukulele tuition books) named Matthew in his Absolute Admiration section in Uke Magazine.
Elisabeth Pfeiffer – International Tutor
We are super excited that Elisabeth will be joining us at our April workshop and any future ones, time and Brexit permitting being that she lives in Vienna, Austria!
Elisabeth is a solo ukulele player with a strong background in classical guitar. She studied at Lawrence University in the USA and HfM Würzburg, Germany, majoring in classical guitar. In 2013 she took up a ukulele and never looked back. Since, she has written three method books on strumming and picking techniques and fretting concepts. On stage she mostly performs solo pieces, but throws in the occasional song, always looking to add something personal to a piece or a song. Her repertoire ranges from Renaissance music to Jazz and Rock covers, as well as contemporary classical music.
Tara Maysey – Founder & Tutor
Tara is in charge of general Youth Orchestra admin and will lend her expertise to vocals and warms ups. She will be on hand to help and support Matt and Elisabeth where she can.
Tara has been performing as a singer/songwriter with performances including the infamous Troubadour & The 606 Club. In 2018 she performed at the award winning Grand Northern Ukulele Festival. She has a great passion for story telling that she brings into play in her original songs and covers on the ukulele.
She started teaching in 2012, specialising in early years teaching with students as young as 3 years old! Her passion for the ukulele started when her husband gave her a soprano ukulele as a 1st wedding anniversary present. As well as changing her life this taught her her greatest lesson………never leave your ukulele behind a parked car as it may result in a squashed ukulele, yikes! She has students of all ages from 3 – 87 years old! She has been teaching RGT ukulele grades for the last 4 years and has a 98% Distinction pass rate with one student getting 98.5% in her Grade 2……not that she is competing with our Musical Director!
Having seen first hand the differences music can make to peoples lives she founded the London Ukulele Project in 2018 and is beyond excited that part of that project is to set up a Youth Orchestra.
